Chronology of cameras Lumiere
The Elax is a folding camera of the Klapp type known for its compact size. It's designed to use 127 film.
Its distinctive feature is the presence of a metal curtain shutter, allowing it to achieve speeds as fast as 1/1000. Slow shutter speeds are also available.
The film advance button (or lever, depending on the specific model) simultaneously cocks the shutter and updates the frame counter for the exposed frames. In some versions, there is an inactive red window at the back, which may or may not be covered by a swiveling cover.
The camera is covered with leather, and most of the metal parts are painted black, except for the polished trim.
Focusing is achieved by rotating the front lens element of the Berthiot Flor 3.5/50 mm lens. There is a semi-integrated viewfinder on the camera. It's rumored that this viewfinder may have been developed by Leitz, although it's surprising that such a feature wasn't highlighted in marketing materials.
Bernard Vial parle d'une quinzaine d'exemplaires pour l'Elax II. Il a les mêmes caractéristiques techniques que l'Elax, seule l'esthétique est modifiée, les parties métalliques sont maintenant chromées au lieu d'être nickelées. Une plaquette d'identification a été rajoutée en façade.
En appuyant sur le bouton situé au dessus du "E" de l'ELAX, on entraîne l'ouverture de l'abattant aidée par les ressorts situés de part et d'autre de l'ensemble soufflet + objectif. L'objectif, en monture rentrante, est un Flor Berthiot 3,5/50 mm qui a bénéficié d'un traitement anti-reflets du plus beau bleu.
La fonction de l'orifice situé en dessous à gauche de ce viseur n'est pas précisée dans la notice Elax.
